CHIROPRACTIC CARE BEATS MEDICATION

Posted on 2012-02-10 10:29:16

CHIROPRACTIC CARE BEATS MEDICATION FOR NECK PAIN, MAKES HEADLINES
New research published this month in the Annals of Internal Medicine finds spinal manipulative therapy (SMT) and exercise more effective at relieving neck pain than pain medication. The study divided participants into three groups that received either SMT from a doctor of chiropractic, pain medication (over-the-counter pain relievers, narcotics and muscle relaxants) or exercise recommendations. After 12 weeks, about 57 percent of those who met with DCs and 48 percent who exercised reported at least a 75 percent reduction in pain, compared to 33 percent of the people in the medication group. After one year, approximately 53 percent of the drug-free groups still reported at least a 75 percent reduction in pain; compared to just 38 percent pain reduction among those who took medication.
The study, funded by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine and co-authored by ACA's 2011 Researcher of the Year Dr. Roni Evans, is making headlines across the country. The results of the study have appeared in AARP Blog, The New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, WebMD and "World News with Diane Sawyer" among other media outlets.

May all your Lights burn brightly all year long

Latke recipe is from Jewish Cookery by Leah W. Leonard (Crown Publishers, 1949). It always works.

Serves 4-6.

6 medium potatoes

1 onion

2 eggs

˝ cup flour

1 teaspoon salt

Vegetable shortening or oil for deep frying (I use peanut oil, but any kind of vegetable oil will do)

Pare and grate potatoes into a mixing bowl. Squeeze out liquid. Peel and grate onion into potatoes. (I grate both together in the food processor). Add eggs, flour and salt and stir to make a smooth batter that will drop heavily from the spoon. Heap the shortening in a heavy frying pan (use a heavy, cast-iron skillet for the best results), using enough to cover the pancakes amply — about a 1/2-inch deep. Drop the batter from a spoon into the hot shortening, making pancakes about 3 inches in diameter. Fry over moderate heat until brown on the underside, turn to brown other side. Lift out and drain off excess fat on paper towel. Serve plain, with sour cream or applesauce.

Northern New Mexico Sweeties Holiday Drive!!!

Posted on 2011-11-30 11:43:28

Northern New Mexico Sweeties & Silverman Spine Center

Holiday Charity Drive

We are officially taking on the following effort for the 2011 Holiday:

Youth Shelter and Family Services of Northern New Mexico

Youth Shelters is the primary agency in the Santa Fe/northern New Mexico area serving homeless, runaway, and street youth and their families, as well as young people who are at risk of being homeless.

The mission of Youth Shelters is to support young people and families in meeting the critical challenges of family life within a safe and stable environment. YS partners with families to find positive, non-institutional solutions and builds on existing strengths within a framework of dignity, mutual respect, and personal responsibility. The agency’s goals are to:

§ Prevent runaway behavior, out-of-home placement, and involvement by at-risk young people in the social services, juvenile justice, or correctional systems, and enable homeless young people who cannot live with their families to develop the necessary skills and resources to live independently.

§ Provide education, counseling, crisis intervention, and case management services to children, youth and their families who are in crisis or at risk.

§ Strengthen and preserve the family unit and enhance the ability of families to solve problems and to build on their strengths.

Their biggest needs are:

1) Toiletries of all kinds- shampoos, toothpaste, soaps, tooth brushes, hair brushes, deodorant,  etc.

2) Warm gloves and socks for older kids, young men and in thicker/warmer varieties

3) Non perishable foods- we are short of food for all our clients right now. Granola bars, peanut butter and jelly, other snacks like pudding, crackers and cheese, beef jerky etc.

All of their clients will benefit from any of the above as those are the items they are really in need of now. I want more specific needs please see attached link:

Deaths from painkiller overdose triple in decade

Posted on 2011-11-01 11:57:15

According to a new  U.S. government report indicates the number of overdose deaths from powerful painkillers have more than tripled over a decade.

Prescription painkillers such as OxyContin, Vicodin and methadone contributed to the deaths of nearly 15,000 people in 2008. That's more than three times the 4,000 deaths in 1999.  According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly 5 percent of

Americans ages 12 and older say they've abused prescription painkillers. Hydrocordone is the second most abused medicine.  Fatal overdoses were more likely in men and middle-aged adults.

Associated Press 11/01/2011

Happy Halloween Safety Tips

Posted on 2011-10-31 07:17:01

WE WANT A SAFE AND FUN HALLOWEEN FOR OUR CHILDREN!

A few safety tips from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission can protect children who plan to go trick-or-treating this Halloween.

Treats: Warn children not to eat any treats before an adult has carefully examined them for evidence of tampering.

Flame Resistant Costumes: When purchasing a costume, masks, beards, and wigs, look for the label Flame Resistant. Although this label does not mean these items won't catch fire, it does indicate the items will resist burning and should extinguish quickly once removed from the ignition source. To minimize the risk of contact with candles or other sources of ignition, avoid costumes made with flimsy materials and outfits with big, baggy sleeves or billowing skirts.

Costume Designs: Purchase or make costumes that are light and bright enough to be clearly visible to motorists.

  • For greater visibility during dusk and darkness, decorate or trim costumes with reflective tape that will glow in the beam of a car's headlights. Bags or sacks should also be light colored or decorated with reflective tape. Reflective tape is usually available in hardware, bicycle, and sporting goods stores.
  • To easily see and be seen, children should also carry flashlights.
  • Costumes should be short enough to prevent children from tripping and falling.
  • Children should wear well-fitting, sturdy shoes . Mother' s high heels are not a good idea for safe walking.
  • Hats and scarfs should be tied securely to prevent them from slipping over children's eyes.
  • Apply a natural mask of cosmetics rather than have a child wear a loose-fitting mask that might restrict breathing or obscure vision. If a mask is used, however, make sure it fits securely and has eyeholes large enough to allow full vision.
  • Swords, knives, and similar costume accessories should be of soft and flexible material.

Pedestrian Safety: Young children should always be accompanied by an adult or an older, responsible child. All children should WALK, not run from house to house and use the sidewalk if available, rather than walk in the street. Children should be cautioned against running out from between parked cars, or across lawns and yards where ornaments, furniture, or clotheslines present dangers.

Choosing Safe Houses: Children should go only to homes where the residents are known and have outside lights on as a sign of welcome.

  • Children should not enter homes or apartments unless they are accompanied by an adult.
  • People expecting trick-or-treaters should remove anything that could be an obstacle from lawns, steps and porches. Candlelit jack-o'-lanterns should be kept away from landings and doorsteps where costumes could brush against the flame. Indoor jack-o'-lanterns should be kept away from curtains, decorations, and other furnishings that could be ignited.

For further information on product safety, consumers may call the U.S . Consumer Product Safety Commission's toll-free hotline on (800) 638-2772. Hearing impaired consumers may use TTY (301) 595-7054.

More Than One in Ten Americans Take an Antidepressant

Posted on 2011-10-24 21:04:40

More Than One in Ten Americans Take an Antidepressant

WALL STREET Journal

Prozac Nation, indeed — 11% of Americans aged 12 and up now take an antidepressant medication, though less than one third of them have seen a mental-health professional in the past year.

So say stats from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that paint a portrait of who used the medications in 2005-08. The report covers nearly 13,000 participants in the ongoing National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES).

The rate of antidepressant use has been climbing, rising by almost 400% since 1988-94, the CDC says. Women are significantly more likely to take antidepressants in every age group except the youngest tracked in this report — ages 12 to 17. The high-water mark for antidepressant use is 23%, seen in women aged 40 to 59.

Nearly 14% of whites take antidepressants, far more than the 4% of blacks and 3% of Mexican-Americans who report taking the medications. But income level is not a determinant of use, the report finds.

Despite the widespread use of antidepressants, the majority of people with severe depressive symptoms — about 66% — are not taking the drugs. Only 20% of men with the most severe symptoms are taking a drug.  About 8% of people reporting no depressive symptoms are taking the drugs, which could be because they’re being successfully treated by the drugs, or because they’re taking the drugs for other conditions.

And the data indicate that a significant number of people who are taking antidepressants — even more than one — haven’t seen a mental-health professional in the past year. Just 29% of those taking one drug and 48% taking two or more report seeing a psychologist, psychiatrist, psychiatric nurse or clinical social worker in that time period.

Research published in August found that nearly 75% of antidepressants were prescribed by non-psychiatrists in 2007. And 6.4% of patients were prescribed the drugs without a diagnosis of mental illness.

A study published earlier this year found that newly depressed people should start off with just one drug, instead of the combinations sometimes prescribed.
